Why I Love Travel Nursing in Tennessee
My Guide to Tennessee: Tips & Local Spots for Travel Nurses
Hey, fellow travel nurses! If you're heading to Tennessee for your next assignment, you're in for a treat. Whether you’re in the heart of Nashville, exploring the vibrant Memphis music scene, or enjoying the natural beauty of the Smoky Mountains, Tennessee has something for everyone. Here’s everything you need to know to make your time in the Volunteer State as enjoyable and smooth as possible.
Flying In: Airports and Getting Around
Flying into Nashville International Airport, Memphis International, or Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson Airport? Here’s what you need to know:
Lounges & Snacks: Nashville International has a handful of lounges, including the American Airlines Admirals Club if you're flying with them. You’ll also find great snacks like locally made BBQ chips and other treats in various airport shops. Memphis has some nice lounges too, and you can grab a meal at a classic Southern diner inside the terminal.
Rental Cars: Tennessee is a great state to explore by car, especially if you're headed to smaller towns or the great outdoors. All major airports have rental car services available, so picking up your car is easy and quick.
Rideshare: If you prefer not to rent a car, you’ll find Uber and Lyft readily available in Nashville, Memphis, and Knoxville. These rideshares will get you to your assignment, local eateries, or the occasional night out with no hassle.
Public Transportation: Nashville has a decent bus system and a fun B-cycle bike-share program. Memphis and Knoxville also have bus systems, but a rental car might be more convenient for exploring outside the city.
Coffee, Shopping, and Dining Out: My Favorite Local Spots
Coffee Shops: Tennessee is full of great coffee spots. In Nashville, don’t miss Barista Parlor for artisan coffee and a chill atmosphere. If you’re in Knoxville, check out K-Brew for excellent local roasts. Memphis also has some great spots like Bluff City Coffee, where you can get your caffeine fix and enjoy some local flair.
Boutiques & Shopping: Nashville’s 12South neighborhood is perfect for boutique shopping. From unique clothing stores to artisan shops, there’s something for everyone. In Memphis, head to Overton Square or Cooper-Young for some of the city’s best independent boutiques and vintage shops.
Food & Drinks: If you love Southern food, Tennessee will not disappoint. Nashville is known for its hot chicken, so make sure to visit Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack for an authentic experience. In Memphis, it’s all about BBQ—head to Central BBQ for a must-try meal. Knoxville has fantastic local diners, too, and make sure to try some traditional biscuits and gravy!
Museums & Culture: Tennessee is rich in music and history. In Nashville, the Country Music Hall of Fame is a must-see. For history buffs, don’t miss the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, or check out the historic sites around the Smoky Mountains.
Things to Do When You’re Off Shift
There’s always something to do when you’re off shift in Tennessee:
Outdoor Fun: The Smoky Mountains offer incredible hiking, camping, and beautiful views. Whether you’re hiking to Clingmans Dome or enjoying the scenic beauty of Cades Cove, outdoor lovers will be in heaven. In Memphis, enjoy a stroll along the Mississippi River or explore Overton Park’s gorgeous green space.
Cultural Events: Nashville has a vibrant arts scene. Catch live music at the Grand Ole Opry or visit the Frist Art Museum. In Memphis, you can’t miss Beale Street’s live blues, or attend one of the city’s many music festivals.
Football Season: Catch a Game When You're in Tennessee
If you’re in Tennessee during football season, you’ve got to catch a game. Whether you’re in the mood for college or pro football, the Volunteer State is home to some serious sports action:
Tennessee Titans: In Nashville, Nissan Stadium is home to the Tennessee Titans. Get your blue and red gear ready for an exciting NFL game. The energy in the stadium is contagious, and the tailgating scene is always buzzing!
University of Tennessee Volunteers: Knoxville is the place to be if you're a college football fan. Head to Neyland Stadium to cheer on the Volunteers. The energy in the stadium is unmatched, and the fans are passionate!
Memphis Tigers: If you’re in Memphis, make sure to check out the Memphis Tigers at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. It’s a fun place to catch some college football action and join in on the local excitement.
Mardi Gras: What to Do if You're on Assignment During Carnival Season
While Tennessee may not have the massive Mardi Gras celebrations like New Orleans, there are still plenty of local celebrations and fun events to experience if you’re on assignment during Mardi Gras:
Parades & Events: Some cities in Tennessee, including Nashville, have smaller Mardi Gras celebrations, complete with parades and themed events. You’ll find plenty of places in the city to grab a drink, enjoy some live music, and join in on the festivities.
Food & Drink: If you're in the mood for King Cake or other Mardi Gras treats, you’ll find bakeries in Nashville and Memphis serving up traditional Cajun and Creole dishes to celebrate the season.
Music & Fun: Tennessee is the heart of music, so even though you may be far from New Orleans, you’ll still find plenty of live performances and local music festivals to enjoy while celebrating Mardi Gras.
Whether you’re in Nashville, Memphis, or exploring the beauty of the Smoky Mountains, Tennessee is a place full of adventure, history, and Southern charm. From music to football, outdoor adventures to cultural events, you’ll never be bored during your travel nurse assignment in this amazing state!
